bottom of the food chain

God I was glad not to be in that line,
but I knew that for a twist of fate I
could just as easily be there...
'cause if I was in the city and hungry,
really hungry and broke, I'd go to
where there was free food too...
just to fill, or partially fill an empty
stomach...for that day.

All they want is food. all they want
is to feed themselves. Standing in line
for everyone to see... who cares who
sees...they're hungry, and pride is
just a memory. And almost mocking
these people, seagulls and pigeons
by the dozens scurry around underfoot
snatching up scraps...almost competing
with these people... these people at the
bottom of the human food chain.

I was glad not to be in that line, and
I was glad that somebody was feeding
these people. finally my bus came,
and as I rode away watching the line,
and the seagulls and the pigeons,
I had forgotten that I was impatient.
